My "Why"

One of the first things I ask people when they are starting on their journey to lose weight or gain health is.. "Why"?
I have haven't told many people my why, and I think it's important to know what drives me to not only improve myself but people around me.

My why:
I want to live FOREVER! I know that this is not possible, but I want to live as long as I possibly can. I want to be with my children & my family every day I possibly can. I know I don't control every circumstance but the ones I can control I am controlling. I don't want them to look back and think.. "I wish mom took better care of herself so we could have had more time with her". I want them to remember these lessons of health and pass them onto their own children. I want to work everyday on my health to know that I may have gained another moment of happiness with them. I am working on seeing my grandchildren, their weddings, their graduations, I am working on seeing more smiles, more laughter and more days.
It's great that maintaining my weight and building lean muscle is a side effect of that, but it's not my why.

What's your why?

Breakfast options

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. I think it just might be. I personally think all meals are very important to your health, but breakfast is a great way to kick off your day right!

Being that Breakfast is so important, I thought I'd dedicate a blog just to it!

Here are some healthy Breakfast options:

-1/2 whole wheat bagel scooped out and stuffed w/ low-fat cottage cheese topped with any berry or fruit you like.

-1 whole wheat waffle topped with natural peanut butter & 1/2 sliced banana

-5 egg whites scrambled with zucchini, spinach & topped w/ diced tomato & avocado.

- 1 scoop chocolate Shakeology, 8 ounces of almond milk, 8 ounces water, 1/2 banana, 1 tbsp natural peanut butter blended well.

-Light yogurt topped with fresh blueberries & granola.

-3/4 c old fashioned oatmeal topped w/ flaxseed meal, almond milk, agave nectar & fresh sliced strawberries.

Breakfast can and is so versatile. It's the meal I look most forward to eating. You can even use leftovers from dinner to work into a healthy breakfast. Use some leftover turkey chili and put it on your egg whites in the morning. Dice up some leftover chicken breast and throw into a pita with your eggs and veggies.

Kick your day off right by starting with a well balanced breakfast that consists of a lean protein, complex carbohydrate & healthy fats.

Happy Wednesday!

Working Out and Making it Count!!

Do you have those days where you are literally forcing your body through your entire workout almost with hesitation and resentment? Wanting so badly to be in bed, relaxing, folding laundry, changing a light bulb, or eating some ice cream.

As much as even I know how hard this is we all have to stop doing this!!

If we're going to make the effort to eat right, put on our workout clothes, lace up our shoes and throw our hair up out of our face, let's make it COUNT!!

Push harder than you thought you could, do an extra push up, half a mile, sit up, lunge, or whatever it is. Make it count!! Your muscles will scream to stop but your head needs to ignore.

What is it that makes you want to not do a workout? Energy, too much to do, already have your makeup and hair done for the day? Whatever it is, find the solution or just get over it and get your sweat on!!

No more half doing your workouts, you will now put 110% into every single workout!

Some tips:

-Schedule it into your day (just like an important meeting that you wouldn't dream of skipping)
-Find a workout buddy. This can be someone online or in person. Check in with this person DAILY!
-Eat right so that your workout counts. Don't spend an hour working your tail off in the gym just to blow it with your nutrition.
-Find the program that works for you. If you like the gym and can make a commitment to go, then sign up and go. If you like to workout at home while your kids nap, find a program, order it and get started.
-STOP making excuses. If you're still making excuses and find yourself a victim of your unhealthy life then you're not ready. You have to give up ALL excuses for this to work.

Make your workout tomorrow COUNT!

Monday Q & A - Beachbody Coaching

Lately I have had a lot of questions about Beachbody coaching, so I have dedicated a entire blog entry to answer the 5 main questions I am asked.

Q: Do you get a discount on Beachbody products. If so, how much is the discount?
A: Yes. The discount that coaches receive is 25% off all products including workout programs and supplements.

Q: How much money can you make coaching?
A: Simply, you get what you put into this business, like most things in life. The more you work with people, dedicate time, and really have a passion for helping people, the more money you make. There is no limit.

Q: I am not in shape yet. Do you have to be in shape to be a coach?
A: No. A lot of people make the choice to coach for their own accountability. Once a coach you're part of a big coaching family, and we are all supportive of each other's health goals.

Q: Is there a fee to sign as a coach?
A: Yes. For a little less than $40 you can sign to be a coach. This fee includes your business starter kit.

Q: How do I sign up to be a coach?
A: You can go to my website www.nutritionmomfitness.com and click on the "coach" tab to start the process of being a coach. Once you have completed it, I will introduce you to our group of amazing, supportive and positive coaches.

These are the 5 main questions that are asked about Beachbody coaching. If you have a question about Beachbody coaching that was not featured on the blog, please feel free to email me at positivenutritionmom@gmail.com and I'd be happy to answer it for you.

Pills are NOT the Solution!

I try to reserve this blog for positive things, motivation, and inspiration, however I feel I must use this as a way to vent today about my frustration.

I have been in this business of helping people reach their fitness and health goals for years now and I try to let certain things roll off my back, but I just couldn't completely let this one go.

I recently had a woman contact me to ask some questions, mainly questions about meal plans and diet.

After giving her many options, ideas and suggestions on how she could go about starting out on her health journey, she proceeded to write me back and tell me that she had recently visited her doctor and he had informed her that she didn't necessarily have to exercise and eat "health" food, that he had a prescription pill that would help lower her blood pressure and reverse some of the damage to her arteries that is caused by years of bad habits!!

She felt after getting this news that she would do some "light stretching" once and a while, and try to incorporate A salad a couple nights a week.

Ummm...

Listen, there is a pill out there for EVERYTHING now a days.
Sad? There's a pill. Hyper? There's a pill. Having issues in the bedroom? There's a pill. Have you eaten poorly and not exercised in 30 years? There's a pill. Do you have an urge to move your legs from time to time (restless legs), there's a pill. Do you have pain? There's a pill. Bloated? There's a pill.

Pills are not the solution. They can help for a lot of serious ailments, but in the end it's not the overall solution to a problem.

For most things that have Americans so unhealthy these days, it's actually a matter of DIET & EXERCISE that will turn your health around. And yes, maybe a pill will help you get there ALONG with diet and exercise, but in the end you will continue with the diet and exercise and the goal would be to stop needing the pill.

Educate yourself because there are doctors out there like this particular one that don't encourage a healthy lifestyle along with the use of prescription medication. It's common sense (or so I used to think) that health wasn't wrapped up in 1 pill. It's a combination of many different things that get you healthy and keep you there!!

Happy Tuesday!

Listen to your Body

We are so busy, so stressed, so rushed and have so many things to do these days that it's no wonder we have lost touch with what our bodies are trying to tell us.

The best way to know what you need is to listen to your body. Get in tune with what and how you feel.

Keep a journal to start, that you can go back and read to learn more about what you need.

After you eat a large unhealthy meal, write down what you ate and how you feel immediately afterwards, then an hour after. Note how you feel a day after as well.
Track how you feel after a healthy light filling meal, immediately, an hour and then 24 hours after.

Keep track of your sleep, what you ate before bed, what time you went to bed, how many times you woke up, and what time you got up in the morning.

Track your exercise, what you do, how you feel afterwards, and how you feel a day after.

You will begin to notice a pattern form. You sometimes won't realize these things because there are so many other things going on in your world to notice.

I recently started really listening to my body. I used to indulge in a diet soda from time to time, and I decided to take notes of the way I feel after drinking a diet soda.

30 minutes after: Little caffeine energy surge, weird small pains throughout joints and in my head.

1 hour after: Pain in my head when I bend down.

2 hours after: Tired and fatigued.

So my little experiment worked because I did this a few more times, and realized that my body was trying to tell me that my occasional indulgence was not sitting well with it, and my body did not want that junk in there.

I highly recommend listening to your body and getting familiar with the little signals that it gives you.

After a couple of times journaling your food, exercise and sleep you will notice patterns that will teach you to better listen to your bodies needs.

Happy Thursday!
